Due to the timing of optional and elective courses, credit accumulation per semester / academic year may vary.
The curriculum fulfils the Act (559/1994 and 1200/2007), Decree (564/1994) and EU directives (updated 2013/55/EU) on health care professionals as well as nationally agreed competence requirements of registered nurse education (2019).
The degree includes at least 60 credits of theological studies and vocational studies related to parish and church work as referred to in the decision by the General Synod on 22 September 2020 (Church statutes no. 141). The degree gives the competence required from those who hold the office of a deacon at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and an office-holder (deaconess) who carries out diaconal work as their main task.
BACHELOR OF HEALTH CARE, DIACONAL NURSE 240 ECTS
BASIC STUDIES 10 ECTS:
Introduction to Swedish 2 ECTS, Professional Swedish 3 ECTS, Professional English 3 ECTS, Orientation to higher education studies 2 ECTS. Finnish language and communication is integrated into vocational studies.
VOCATIONAL STUDIES 207 ECTS

THESIS 15 ECTS
The bachelor of health care, diaconal nurse studies comprise of six thematic sections divided into study modules. The thematic sections are:
• The basis of professional encounters and the service system 34 ECTS
• Inclusion and guidance 32 ECTS
• Clinical nursing 34 ECTS
• Variety of life paths and health promotion 59 ECTS
• Applied and developing expertise 33 ECTS
• Participatory research and advocacy 48 ECTS
Church studies (60 ECTS) are partially integrated into nursing studies and partially separate. They have the following structure:
• Theological studies 20 ECTS
• Church vocational studies 25 ECTS
• Parish and church working life studies 15 ECTS
The studies follow the Community-Based Participatory Research model (CBPR) where learning and assignments can be used to benefit the development needs in the working life
