Objective

Students
• understand ageing and related changes from a multidisciplinary perspective
• understand the principles of medical and evidence-based care for the most common diseases of older people
• can use and apply methods to assess the need for medical care of older customers
• understand the individual life situations and life course of older people (loneliness, abuse, life history) and can provide guidance on the use of available services
• are familiar with the Act on Services for Older Persons, the Quality Recommendations for Older Persons and the values of social work with older people
• understand the principles of RAI assessment and know the criteria for assessing the functional capacity of older people
• know the principles of chronic wound care for older people
• are aware of professional interaction and guidance of patients and their family members
• understand the importance of supporting the wellbeing of people with a memory disorder and their family member in their everyday lives
• understand the specificities of mental health and substance abuse among older people
• understand the use of health technology applications in the care of older people and to promote their ability to cope at home
• develop their oral and written Finnish language skills needed in care settings
