Objective

Work placement objectives
Students
• understand the surgical patient care pathway and the different stages of the perioperative care process
• are able to plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based care of a surgical patient taking into account patient safety
• can use systematic approaches and scoring systems to assess the clinical condition of patients (cABCDE, NEWS, GCS)
• can prepare and guide patients for examinations, procedures, rehabilitation and self-care
• can identify surgical patients’ complications and risk factors for them
• understand the specificities of asepsis in the care of surgical patients and the prevention of infections
• can plan, implement and evaluate under supervision safe and aseptic pharmacotherapy using different routes of administration
• can administer parenteral nutrition and fluid therapy and pharmacotherapy under supervision
• can implement different methods of pain management for surgical patients (medical and non-medical treatment)
• can identify risk points typical of the working environment in the pharmacotherapy process
• are able to document and assess the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy and can work in unusual situations
• can document and report (ISBAR) on the overall care of patients
• understand the significance of a multiprofessional team and know how to work in multiprofessional networks
• can use the technological tools and applications in an ethical and customer-oriented manner
• develop their oral and written Finnish language skills needed in nursing
• can assess the stage of their professional growth

Objectives of work placement reflection
Students
• reflect on the importance of the work placement in relation to their own professional growth
• consider the surgical care process for the patient and development ideas for the care pathway
• reflect on sustainable development from the perspective of a patient’s care pathway

Qualifications

In health sector education, participation in first-semester practical training and subsequent internships requires that the student has successfully completed Safe pharmacotherapy and medical calculation (PHA1) study module. Additionally, before each subsequent internship, the student must successfully complete the relevant medication administration and calculation modules related to that specific internship.
