Objective
In this course, you will learn the basics of written and spoken Japanese. After this introductory chapter, every chapter contains sections on grammar, vocabulary and writing system, as well as exercises on each topic. Some chapters, like this first one, also contain short texts giving basic information on Japanese culture. The focus in this course is to get an overview of the language and learn to understand simple written Japanese. After this course you will know basic phrases and questions for everyday situations and will be able to introduce yourself. You can read and write both Japanese syllabaries, hiragana and katakana, and will know the basics of kanji characters. You will learn how to write Japanese on digital devices, but it is recommended to practise writing by hand as well. Even though the focus is on written language, the course also includes listening comprehension exercises to give you elementary skills in spoken Japanese. This course gives you a good basis for continuing to study Japanese on other courses or independently.
