Objective

Students
• can use systematic approaches and indicators to assess the clinical condition of the patient
• recognise the most common disorders of vital functions and the risk factors that predispose to them
• know how to use evidence-based interventions to support breathing, circulation, secretory functions and fluid balance taking into account patient safety
• know the principles of enteral fluid and nutrition therapy and pharmacotherapy
• know the principles of CPR and how to perform CPR
• are aware of professional interaction and guidance of patients and their family members
• develop their oral and written Finnish language skills needed in care settings

Content

• applying systematic approaches and indicators (ISBAR, cABCDE, NEWS, GCS) to the assessment and reporting of a patient’s condition
• identification and treatment of the most common respiratory, circulatory, secretion and fluid balance disorders
• assisting with breathing, supporting oxygenation and suctioning airways
• taking care of special functions; short-term and indwelling catheterisation, lowering fluid balance
• identifying emergency patients, principles of CPR and performing CPR
• high-quality ECG recording and the most common arrhythmias
• enteral fluid and nutrition therapy and pharmacotherapy; nasogastric tube, PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy)
• administering medicines via different routes; intramuscular injection (IM), administering inhaled medications
• professional interaction and patient guidance

Precondition of the course is the completion of the "internal medicine and cancer care, 3cr"-course according to Diak's degree regulation §15.
