- understand the process of ageing
- understand the key principles of gerontology and values of work with older people
- understand relevant legislation and service system
- know the position and expertise of a Bachelor in Social Services when working with older people
- work with older people with diverse needs
- apply the relevant social networks and service providers in work wile older people

Teaching methods

The study module is completed as an online course including orientation at campus, independent studying, study circle, field visit, group work and online supervision. Students produce a written assignment in small groups.
The aim of the written assignment is to help the student to understand ageing as a stage of life. Student can analyse own values and attitudes in relation to ageing as a process and older people. Student establishes an understanding on Finnish ageing policy and legislation.
Student finds out about the service sector (public, private, third sector) and ways of working with older people in Finland. Furthermore, student critically reflects own professionalism as well as the expertise needed in work with older people in social sector..

Completion alternatives

Extensive written assignment or participation in a pre-agreed work-life related project or similar.

The study module requires skills to use Diak´s online learning area and ability to participate to online lectures and supervision.
