Objective

Competency aims:
• This course contributes to increasing the competence of clinical nursing.
• The competence increases in the medical and surgical context and the medical competence will also consolidate.
• Theoretical knowledge and practical skills in medical-surgical nursing

Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course the student is expected to
• Assess and observe changes in the state of health in the medical-surgical patient using the ABCDE mnemonic tool
• Establish a caring relationship with the patient and relatives
• Demonstrate practical skills in medical and surgical nursing
• Utilize the perioperative process when caring for a patient
• Practice caring science in the clinical context
• Give an oral report using the ISBAR mnemonic tool

Teaching methods

The course includes both online learning and classroom teaching sessions. Classroom teaching sessions; activating lectures, skill labs and simulations are mandatory to participate.

Exam schedules

The exam of medical and surgical nursing which combinates medication and medication calculation at the end of the course

Content scheduling

Learning process is introduced in Diakle. This course includes self study, activating lectures, skill labs and simulations. In the end of the course will be held a literature examination which includes medication and medication calculation.

The student develops her/his competence in the
contextual clinical care. The student forms
her/his competence in the care of the medical-
surgical patient

2. Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student is
expected to be able to:
- use evidence based caring science in the care of the medical and surgical patient
- take care of the patient with medical or surgical problems
- understand how the health resources and the health obstacles
interact in the medical-surgical care of the adult and elderly patients
- understand the basics of the perioperative care (pre- and postoperative care)

3. Acitivities/contents
- Patient assessment by using patient safety tools (ABCDE, NEWS)
- Central caring activities and examinations in the care of the medical-surgical patient
- The decision making process in health care; planning, implementation and assessment of the caring
- Medical-surgical medication administration
- The basics of the perioperative care (pre- and postoperative care) of the patient
- Documentation of nursing (tools as ISBAR)

Further information

- Activating lectures, skill labs and simulations are mandatory to participate to pass the course

- The student has to pass the course to go out on Internal medicine and surgical care-practical training.

Assessment methods and criteria

To pass the course the student should follow the online learning process step by step in Diakle.

The course is evaluated as numerically 1-5/failed (The exam of medical and surgical nursing which combinates medication and medication calculation at the end of the course)
