Objective

Competence aims:
• The aim of the course is to develop the student's clinical competence to improve her/his knowledge about and capacity to act in the context of mental health care.

Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course the student is expected to
Theoretical competence:
• Knows the structure of psychiatric health care system
• Has knowledge about mental health and disturbances in mental health
Competence to act in practical situations:
• Understands the special aspects of the processes in mental health care and has capacity to apply this
• Is able to identify, meet and take care of patients suffering from different kind of mental problems and illnesses
• Can participate in planning, realizing and evaluation of patient care, furthermore has capacity to create an individual plan for patient care
• Understands the meaning of caring relationship, furthermore has capacity to use the self to promote patient's mental health
Ethical competence:
• Can apply ethical principles in psychiatric context
• Is aware about own capacities and limits, furthermore can use counseling as a professional tool for self-development
• Understands variations in the phenomena of closeness and distance in psychiatric care

Content

Course contents:
• Theoretical studies in psychiatric care
• Theoretical and practical studies from study year 1 and 2.
• Medical calculation exam must be valid according to instructions.

Teaching methods

Suitable placements for this practice are:

- Psychiatric and drug addiction units at district, central or university hospital for example psychiatric outpatient clinic, psychiatric ward, eating disorder unit, addiction psychiatric outpatient clinic
- Outpatient care offers also different kinds of support services, such as supported living or rehabilitative day-time activities
provided by the public or the private mental health services
- Third sector actors, i.e. different kinds of organisations

Clinical placements in mental health or addiction settings.

Student workload

10 etcs = 267 hours, 8h can be reduced (for CV, placement search via Jobiili, reflections), so total amount of hours are 259 hours. It means approximately 37 hours per week. In calendar weeks this is 7 weeks

Assessment methods and criteria

The clinical practice will be evaluated as passed/failed.

The student have to
- Make her/his own goals for the practices
- Agree the evaluation meetings with supervising teacher and supervisor from the hospital
- participate in reflections
