Objective
Competency aims:
The aim of the course is the student
• Can apply previous knowledge in health care and researches when encountering clients from different cultural background and ages in a home care environment.
• Be familiar with the administrative work within home care and outpatient care.
• Be familiar with patient centered care and documentations.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course the student is expected to
• Be familiar with home care as a working field
• Know who the most relevant collaborators are within home care and knows which occupational groups are part of the home care team/
• Participate in home care staff meetings and can see the connection between the administrative work and the practical field work
• Practice skills that are of relevance for the nurse/public health nurse in home care/outpatient care
• Be able to vary his/her way of work depending on the client's age and cultural background
• Plan, carry out and evaluate a home care visit, prioritize the need of care, estimate and document the need of nutrition, hygiene, mobility and need for pharmaceuticals
• Be able to carry out a home visit independently
LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR OUTPATIENT CARE
Theoretical competence:
• Integrate knowledge from different sciences/courses such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, pathology, internal medicine, surgery as well as nursing sciences and apply this knowledge in open care units.
• Apply the knowledge to form a comprehensive picture of the care process in open care.
• Understand what resources are available to health professionals when caring for patients with need for care in open care. Understands the importance of health promotion in open care and clients individual possibilities and obstacles to maintain his/hers own health
• Understands the importance of communication during care both in multiprofessional team and between client and caregiver.
• Understands the difference between hospital and open care and is aware the means how to co-operate between organizations.
Competence to act in practical situations:
• Possess basic nursing care skills needed in open care.
• Apply the treatment process, for example, to observe/assess, analyze, plan and implement needed care in open care.
• Meet the patient's underlying problems, needs, and desires, and increasingly see the patient's whole care picture.
• Be able to administer medications used in open care and can give guidance in medical use to clients.
• Can do documentation of care/ clients condition on the way it is done in the unit.
Ethical competence:
• Be aware of their own level of competence and seek guidance when knowledge and skills are lacking.
• Follow the ethical guidelines for care.
• Understand the importance of confidentiality.
• Understand the importance of ethics in cooperation between staff and client and family members.
