Objective
Students
• can use systematic approaches and indicators to assess the clinical condition of a patient
• can implement evidence-based clinical treatments, investigations and nursing interventions in the care of surgical patients
• are able to prepare a patient for surgery
• know the principles of stoma treatment
• know the principles of surgical wound care and suture/agraffe removal
• know the principles of parenteral fluid and nutrition therapy and pharmacotherapy
• are aware of professional interaction and guidance of patients and their family members
• develop their oral and written Finnish language skills needed in care settings
Content
• systematic monitoring of breathing, circulation, consciousness and pain in surgical patients (cABCDE, NEWS, CGS, VAS)
• preparing a patient for surgery
• sterile scrubs, setting up a sterile table and operating area
• surgical wound care, different drains and suture/agraffe removal
• peripheral vein cannulation
• different i.v. routes
• parenteral fluid and nutrition therapy and pharmacotherapy
• care and self-care management of patients with a stoma
• professional interaction and patient guidance

Qualifications
The study module Basics of clinical nursing (CLI01) and the study module Clinical nursing skills workshops and simulations (CLI02) have been completed.
Surgical nursing (SUR01) participation in teaching/the study module has been completed.

Precondition of the course is the completion of the "internal medicine and cancer care, 3cr" and "internal medicine and cancer care workshops and simulations, 4cr"-courses according to Diak's degree regulation §15 as well as the previous clinical courses:

- CLI0202N24S Clinical nursing skills workshops and simulations
The language of instruction is Finnish in skills workshops and simulations. English is used as a supportive language. Learning material is in English ja support material in Finnish (e.g. national treatment recommendations i.a. Käypä Hoito, Hotus + support vocabulary).
