Objective

The student knows:
- the process of establishing a company
- business forms and their differences
- necessary steps and official obligations in setting up a company
The student can:
- prepare a business plan and acquisition of financial resources
The student understands:
- requirements related to taxation and accounting of the company
- the stages of starting and developing the company's operations

Content

- You will reflect on your own entrepreneurial skills and prepare a preliminary business plan
- You will choose a company form that suits your business idea
- You will practice filling out the documents required to establish a company

Location and time

Studying period is 24.8.2026-30.7.2027. It is recommended that the course is completed in 8 weeks.

Teaching methods

Starting a company (2 credits) is a non-stop study course that can be completed independently and at your own pace. During the study period, you will learn what is involved in starting a company in Finland and what it requires of you as a starting entrepreneur. The study course introduces the process of starting a company using four themes:

a) Am I an entrepreneur?
b) Business idea and business plan
c) Choice of company form
d) Documents of establishment of the company

Each theme consists of stimulating videos, teaching material, additional material and an exercise task. The tasks test the student's ability to reflect on their own skills, think about their own goals and plan their own business.

Course doesn’t include any exams, only written assignments.

Completion alternatives

No possibility for RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning).

Student workload

The study course has a scope of 2 credits. One credit means about 27 hours of study. The course is completed independently and at your own pace, so you can influence the workload yourself, e.g. with your own scheduling.

Assessment criteria

The course is approved when all practice tasks have been successfully completed. If necessary, tasks should be supplemented based on the teacher's feedback. The study course has been rejected if an exercise assignment has not been completed by the deadline.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The course is evaluated on a approved-failed scale. The student receives feedback on the practice tasks in writing afterwards.
