The course introduces the fundamentals of music writing, arranging, and also composing. The aim is to acquire skills that structure the different aspects of the work in a way that supports creativity and productivity. The themes of the course are: 1. THE CONCEPT OF ARRANGING AND CONSTRUCTION OF FORM 2. HARMONY, TONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND TECHNIQUES OF CHORDING 3. ROLE DISTRIBUTION AND FINALISATION OF THE SCORE An exercise task is assigned for each area, which will be reviewed during the webinars.

The course introduces the fundamentals of music writing, arrangement, and also composition. The aim is to acquire skills that organise different aspects of the work in a manner that supports creativity and achievement. The course themes are: 1. THE CONCEPT OF ARRANGEMENT AND STRUCTURING FORM 2. HARMONY, TONAL RELATIONSHIPS, AND TECHNIQUES OF CHORDING 3. DISTRIBUTION OF ROLES IN THE SET AND FINALISING An exercise will be completed for each area, which will be reviewed during the webinars.

Online course and webinars: The first webinar, the course opening, will be held on 26 January from 16:00 to 17:30 at the following Zoom address: https://metropolia.zoom.us/j/69586665903 The recording of the opening webinar will be published in the course workspace and/or Moodle. The dates of the subsequent webinars will be agreed with the group after the course has started. They will be held at the above Zoom address. Teaching methods
The online course consists of three self-study modules with assignments and three related webinars, during which the topics are addressed face-to-face online and feedback is provided on the assignments. The course's opening webinar will be held on 26 January 2026 from 16:00 to 17:30. The implementation period is spring 2026.
Qualifications
RECOMMENDED SKILLS: - At least a music conservatory-level proficiency in the fundamentals of music - Ability to read and write notation, at least in treble and bass clefs - The capacity to perceive the melodic line aurally based on what is read - Ability to notate a sounding melodic line, such as a melody - Mastery of the basics of rhythm: pulse, bar, time signature, and note values - Accurate rhythmic notation in relation to the time signature - Diatonic system: notation, keys, and scales - Common triads and seventh chords with their respective notational conventions - Tonality as a concept, dominant-tonic relationships
