Objective

The purpose of the course is to strengthen the student’s research and development competence using various methods and to support opportunities to produce new knowledge in various development projects. In addition, the purpose is to strengthen problem-solving skills and critical argumentation and knowledge building skills. The student is able to identify working life-oriented research and development needs and opportunities from different perspectives. The student masters the basics of systematic data search as part of research and development activities. The student is familiar with the methods suitable for research and development projects and masters the basics of qualitative, quantitative and development methods. The student complies with good scientific practice, is familiar with data protection and data management principles and can apply these principles in research and development activities. The student identifies factors influencing the reliability and quality of research and development projects and knows the basics of how to assess them. The student masters the basics of expert communications.

Teaching methods

This study unit is intended for students of the Open University of Applied Sciences and for cross-institutional students, not for Metropolia’s degree students. The study unit is delivered entirely online and can be completed according to your own schedule. The implementation proceeds in line with the planned timetable, but it can also be completed entirely at your own pace. You may start and finish your studies at a time that suits you. The implementation includes independent work supported by learning materials (videos, literature, podcasts), and completing tasks based on these. All tasks in the study unit are individual assignments. Alternative submission dates are available for the assignments. Assignments are assessed and recorded during the first week of each month (except in July).

Student workload

27 h = 1 credit. 135 h = 5 credits. A total of 135 h of student work. Independent study in Moodle, 2 credits + a progressively staged individual assignment, 3 credits.
