Objective

The students are familiar with the current discussion on child welfare. The students are familiar with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The students are familiar with the principles and contents of the Child Welfare Act. They know and are able to apply basic concepts related to child welfare. The students recognize the reasons behind the need for child welfare and are familiar with the different stages of the child welfare process. They identify ethical issues related to child protection. The students are able to reflect on their own professional activities and understand their own role in the multidisciplinary cooperation of child welfare.

Content

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Tasks, core values,and principles of child protection. The best interests of the child, inclusion and the rights in child protection. Preventive child protection. Child protection process. Child Welfare Act. Social Welfare Act in relation to the Child Welfare Act. The service system of child protection.

Location and time

The study unit is primarily intended for SXH25K2VE students; therefore, they have priority for enrolment. In addition, students in the SXH25K2SO group may enrol on the study unit.

The study unit uses the Moodle platform, through which students deepen their competence in themes related to child protection independently and collaboratively.

Any AHOT application related to the study unit must be submitted by 1 August 2026.

If a student has a decision on individual support that affects completion of the study unit, the student must contact the teachers responsible for the study unit implementation at the beginning of the study unit and present the written decision.

The teacher will explain the guidelines regarding the use of artificial intelligence at the beginning of the study unit.

Exam schedules

Each exam lasts 2 hours. The exam includes a generous amount of time for all students, and individual extra time arrangements are therefore not required. However, if you have any other decision on an individual arrangement, inform the teacher immediately at the beginning of the study unit.

A failed exam may be resat in either of the resit opportunities listed. A passed exam may be retaken once, in the immediately following resit opportunity.
