Objective

After successfully conducting the course students are familiar with current and critical academic discussion of constructing theology. After the course, the student 1. understands the wide meanings of theology and related concepts 2. understand, how an individual builds personal sources of meaning and how worldview is related to sources of meaning 3. is familiar with different approaches to meaning in Christian tradition 4. can analyse the processes of constructing theology from the perspective of varying groups and communities 5. is able to identify contemporary and future challenges and opportunities related to theology, religion, and diaconia Generic skills: Critical thinking, Identification and development of personal expertise

Content

The following topics are covered on the course: 1. Introduction to the meanings of theology, religion, and diaconia – Defining core concepts 2. Approaches to meaning in Christian tradition 3. Personal sources of meaning and their construction 4. Sources of meaning – perspectives of everyday, work, and leisure time 5. Woldview and meaning 6. Experience in research and practices of theology, diaconia and religion 7. Constructing theology: theological, practical, and critical perspective 8. Meaningful theology, religion, and diaconia in the future

Materials

Study material is released in course platform. The material is in Finnish and English.

Further information

Offering data: This course is part of the Constructing meaningfulness and meaningful community study module. The course is mandatory for students approved to the study module. The course is also open to other Master's students in theology. By completing this course, students majoring in practical theology (Western) can replace Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, 5 ECTS OR Topical Questions in Practical Theology, 5 ECTS. Other Master's students in theology can include this course in advanced studies in one's own major, as agreed with the professor, or in optional studies.
